Saturday, 11 September 2004

A Harrowby comeback earned the Lincolnshire side the point which took them to the top of the table, a point ahead of Woodford and Cogenhoe who were both on FA Vase duty. After a goalless first half Desborough looked set to avenge their 6-2 drubbing by the Arrows in the corresponding fixture last term when they opened up a two goal lead. George Donnelly broke the deadlock five minutes after the restart, lobbing Arrows keeper Ian Flavell from fully thirty yards, and Grant Mawby marked his return to action with a 73rd minute second from Sam Johnson's through pass. Four minutes later Darren Glover made the most of a free kick to reply for the Arrows who levelled in the dying seconds through Gary Walters.

Sam Parrish reduced the arrears twelve minutes from time but it was too little too late for Newport. Moment of the Match has to be McPolin's "spandex gimp mask" celebration after scoring Desborough's second goal. (If only there was photographic evidence !!!)

The outcome remained in doubt until the last ten minutes when two home substitutes returned from injury with a bang. Round 3

Abingdon Town  0    Desborough Town  2

Saturday, 11 December 2004

Desborough reached the last 32 of the Vase for the second season running with an excellent win over their Ryman League hosts. League Cup
Round 2

Thrapston Town  2    Desborough Town  5

Tuesday, 14 December 2004

Thrapston's giantkilling prospects diminished with their decision to forego home advantage and play the tie at the Waterworks Field but at the interval the calculated gamble looked set to pay off as they had their noses in front. Desborough's quality shone through in the second half as they fought back to progress.

Desborough took the lead in their first real attack after four minutes when an astute pass by Grant Mawby played in Eddie Mills on the left to fire home from the edge of the box. Mawby almost added a second, volleying over from a Tony Page pass, but Thrapston battled back and when the home defence failed to clear their lines from an eleventh minute corner they were punished as Jim Wilson drilled home a low shot from the edge of the area. With their confidence boosted Jim Bailey blazed wide for the Division One side after Zeke Lyford's surging run created the opening. Play quickly switched to the other end with Jamie Gilsenan crashing a free kick against the visiting crossbar, Mawby unable to turn in the loose ball. Four minutes before the break a stunning 30 yard strike from Bailey arrowed into the top left hand corner of Paul Bersford's net.

After the break Desborough's pace quickly unsettled the Thrapston defence and Gilsenan burst clear on the right after 54 minutes to lob the ball over stranded keeper Phil Turner for the equaliser. Turner then made a point blank save to thwart Mawby who looked a certain scorer from a Matty Curtis cut back. As the pressure mounted Tom Mills had a shot blocked on the goal line. Ar Tarn went in front after 75 minutes, Curtis heading in at the far post from a Scott Marshall corner. With six minutes remaining Beresford made a superb save to thwart Bailey as he burst through the centre and then Lyford sent a fierce cross shot fizzing across goal. Desborough wrapped up the win sixty seconds later when Shaun McPolin held off two challenges to send Gilsenan clear to apply a confident finish. In stoppage time Gilsenan's pass sent Eddie Mills clear only for Keith Morson to handle on the goalline. Mills duly converted the penalty to give Ar Tarn a flattering winning margin.
