Stotfold  3    Desborough Town  1

Saturday, 09 August 2008

The champions got the better of the Knockout Cup holders in this opening day Roker showdown, although many of the players responsible for those successes had moved on to pastures new.

Matty O'Neill gave Ar Tarn a sixth minute advantage with a cross cum shot from out on the right but reserve graduate Ryan Aldrin hauled the Eagles level seven minutes later with a dipping shot from the edge of the box.

Desborough almost regained the lead late in the first half when Eddie Mills hit the home crossbar from distance.

The champions went in front through Callum Donnelly after a right wing run and cross from Aldrin five minutes into the second half and a 68th minute Stuart Lochhead header from an Aldrin corner made it a winning start at the Stotfold helm for Ian Donnelly.

Extra Preliminary Round

Saffron Walden 2 Desborough Town 1

Wednesday, 20 August 2008

Ar Tarn again struggled to maintain second-half momentum and subsequently crashed out of the FA Cup at the first stop again.

A first-half penalty from Blaikie following Tolton being upended in the box on 25 minutes had Ar Tarn going in with a precious lead. There was a scare just before the break when Walden had a close decision rule an equaliser out as offside. This was responded to by Cory Grant beating two defenders only to see his effort saved.

Saffron Walden returned to the pitch a different side for the second-half and gained a deserved equaliser when Dominic Piggott stopped , expecting the ref’s whistle that never came, and a goal scored as a result of the cross.

In the 67th minute a further misunderstanding in the Desborough defence when Page headed back only for a Saffron Walden striker to pounce and give them the lead.

A few minutes later and the introduction of Danny Rodgers and Jordy Mitchell in attack changed nothing.Geoghegan was curiously booked for an inocuos challenge and Tolton was booked late on for dissent.

The inevitable final whistle blew and Ar Tarn were out of the FA Cup again.

Team: Geoghegan, Donativo, Tolton, Piggott, Wood, Page, Grant, O’Neill, Blaikie, Haughton, Rowbottom

Buckby extended their sequence of league victories to five but it left it late to subdue Ar Tarn.

Mick Tolton equalised for Desborough after 56 minutes, taking a return pass to break through the home rearguard and slot home.

Heavy late pressure from Buckby looked like going unrewarded, particularly when Holmes was denied a second goal by the post.
